TRIPOLI-
FRESCO
ARCHIVE :

The Fresco archives provide access to unselected photographs for the exhibition and the book. Out of the eight or nine thousand pictures taken during my stay, I only retained 2881, of which  336 are in the book and 564 are in the exhibition.

These archives were designed to complement the book and the exhibition. They can be consulted to learn more about the different areas of the Fresco and can also be used for research (by students, architects, historians, journalists, etc.).

Description

Each part of the Fresco is associated with a specific area of Tripoli. The choice of the different areas developed slowly as the months went by. It is the result of observations, listening, conversations, sometimes reading, but above all, my earthly experience in Tripoli.

The different archive pages are labeled by zone, after the files are stored on my computer (old town, modern city, etc.). This arrangement does not have the rigor of a map that's "seen from the sky" and has relentless boundaries. The main objective was to simplify the process of searching the images for me when I was working. This arrangement, which has been reproduced in the archives, enables us to see a glimpse of part of my work process. It's important to keep in mind that these archives are pertaining to the Tripoli Fresco, and not Tripoli in general.

It goes without saying that there are discrepancies between the files' arrangement, the Fresco’s compositions, and reality. Let's not forget that reality is viewed from multiple perspectives. It’s likely that a seventy-year-old woman from Tripoli, who has lived in the old city for her entire life, doesn’t define the "borders" of the area in the same manner as a photographer from Nice would do when he discovers Tripoli at the age of 29.

Despite being arranged chronologically, the archive does not feature the images displayed in the exhibition or book. If you have a "favorite photo" in the Fresco, you may find  those that were taken directly before and after in the archiver... Excellent training in mage and memory association.
